Beauty and the Bike Part 2
The Beauty and the Bike project reports what has happened since the film. Cycling is still considered uncool by most teenagers and the girls who are still cycling report a daily battle with poor infrastructure and inconsiderate drivers. However, one girl reports she gets more room from motorists on a sit-up dutch bike than she used to on her mountain bike, something that echoes my own...

Keeping it level
I love it when I spot people transporting unusual objects on their bikes. This guy appears to be carrying a spirit level on his rear rack.

Cycling Conversations
Two friends cycling and chatting a common site in some counties, but a rare site in Sheffield. These two were joking…
and laughing…
Shame the lack of suitable infrastructure meant they had to ride single file. Kind of compromises the conversation.

No, not really, it was only when I downloaded my photos that I discovered this guy kept popping up.

Speed
There is an advert currently being run on TV here which takes as it’s premise that the British hate haggling, it is something road safety campaigners should take note of. Aim low and you are going to get no-where - your reasonable requests will be compromised to the point where nothing is left, cast your aspirations a bit higher and you stand a chance of making an impact.

The Story of Modern Sheffield
A film made by two Sheffield lads in 2004/5 who are obviously very proud of their city. It is fascinating to watch for two reasons, firstly because so much has changed in Sheffield in the short time that has passed since they made this film and secondly, to see what is landmarks are considered important by children.
There is a particularly poignant moment when he explains why he has ridden his...

Why don't women cycle - again
Yet, again campaigners are baffled. Why don’t women cycle in Britain? This time it’s the turn of the British Cycling federation
“Although participation in Cycling has increased at an unprecedented level over the past 12 months (113,000 more weekly cyclists), female participation has decreased. This trend magnifies the escalating gap between male and female participation in...

Dvds and breadcakes or medals and meat?
We are living in hard times and shops have to diversify. How about a film when you go to get your lunch?
or a victoria cross with your steak?
Who needs a department store when you can find all this at your local shop?

Sitting up straight - in defence of Mike Rubbo
A lady at my yoga class commented to me the other day that she had seen me cycling past the day before. “You cut a very striking figure on your bike. I think it is because you are sat up so straight, not hunched and slumped like you normally see people.” I responded by telling her most bikes force people into that “hunched” position and that my bike was Dutch and designed...

Mondrian Hat
“I believe it is possible that, through horizontal and vertical lines constructed with awareness, but not with calculation, led by high intuition, and brought to harmony and rhythm, these basic forms of beauty, supplemented if necessary by other direct lines or curves, can become a work of art, as strong as it is true.”

Cycling in Heels
[If you are interested in footwear, you must check out the cycling in heels blog, for more posts on this subject :-) ]
Well I had to try it out…
Yes, cycling in proper heels, I don’t count my platforms as “proper” heels as I feel like they are cheating, because you forget that you have them on. So I was curious to try riding in my tallest heels at 10cm (4in) high they...

What did the Council ever do for me?
A great way to market cycling - is there a “and to find out more about learning to ride a bike go to this website/ring this number” ? No of course not - people might actually do it.

Sheffield's 'Great Snow Debate'
From The Star
Should Sheffield spend £8m to grit every road if ice returns?
TOWN Hall bosses have drawn up new proposals to keep Sheffield moving in a repeat of this year’s big freeze.Councillors now want residents to have their say on what is being labelled Sheffield’s ‘Great Snow Debate’. Sheffield Council put 28,000 tonnes of grit on the city roads, at a cost of £3...

More winter layers
I am rather concerned about this guy’s method of transporting his D-lock. I don’t know much about these matters, but from what I’m led to believe sudden braking may cause some serious injury.
The guy on the left looks a bit doubtful too…

Red Check Casual Asymmetry
A miserable lunchtime, heavy drizzle and a cold wind.
Down the hill…
then back up again.
look closely…
how to deal with the lack of a chainguard. Some people go for trouserclips, or trousers in socks, but this guy just opts for casually rolling up one trouserleg. A cool asymmetry.

Junctions
A lot is made about how junctions are particularly hazardous for cyclists. So Sheffield Council has thoughtfully provided this small oasis of safety where cyclists can wait to cross two lanes of traffic travelling at 40mph and make a dash for it to join the well protected cycle lane on the other side. It’s clearly so safe it doesn’t need any traffic lights to allow the cyclist to...
