Yes, it’s another of those black metal boxes parked on a cycle path. Not even stopped with the engine running (click on the full size image in flickr, there’s no exhaust smoke), but parked, probably for the day outside the owner’s house, because the council inconsiderately put a cycle contraflow lane there.

David Hembrow posted on his blog the other day about British one way systems being purely a means of keeping traffic flowing and creating race-track type environments that are particularly hostile to cycling. I think our beloved council and their talented traffic planners are sometimes quite hurt and baffled when cyclists criticise the lovely facilities they so thoughtfully provide for us. They can’t imagine why we don’t like them or understand why we are so ungrateful. Look they have been so kind as to allow us passage into the centre of town with this lovely cycle lane.

Aesthetics v comfort
A very tasteful cycle contra-flow lane in pink granite by the town hall, but as my daughter aptly put it:
