Sheffield Hackney Carriage 619
Sheffield Hackney Carriage 619 Registration MX54ABF Yes, it’s another of those black metal boxes parked on a cycle path. Not even stopped with the engine running (click on the full size image in flickr, there’s no exhaust smoke), but parked, probably for the day outside the owner’s house, because the council inconsiderately put a cycle contraflow lane there.

Bollards!
David Hembrow posted on his blog the other day about British one way systems being purely a means of keeping traffic flowing and creating race-track type environments that are particularly hostile to cycling. As opposed to Dutch infrastructure that seeks to increase permeability for cyclists and remove rat running and mean what traffic there is is purely people accessing their homes. Here below,...

Gym'll Fix It
It’s February and peak time for gym attendance while people are still trying to stick to their New Year resolutions and keep fit. As you can see people take keeping fit very seriously in Sheffield… there are four bikes here (one of which is mine). I think the record I’ve seen is eight and three of them were from our family and another three appeared to be another family with...

New Bike Shop
Ironically, I spotted that the Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative is due to open a shop in Sheffield soon when I was driving past in the car. When I go on my bike, I take a short cut down the bike path and never go that way normally! “Bicycles are our passion. To quote the Pulitzer Prize-winning Californian novelist, William Saroyan, ‘The bicycle is the noblest invention of mankind. I love the...

Bags
I don’t have a basket on my bike, but what I do have is a KLICKfix adaptor that lets me change what bag I fix on the front. It’s a quick release system that makes it easy to clip the bag on and off. You press the red button and lift the bag off. This is my work bag, the fixing attachment is hidden under a nifty flap so it’s not obvious when you are carrying it around as a...

A Vision for Cycling in Sheffield in 2011
A Vision for Cycling in Sheffield in 2011 After seeing how the Dutch do it, now let’s look at the ambitious plans for Sheffield shall we: By 2011 Sheffield City Council and its partners will have created the conditions in which many more people choose to use a bike to get around. We will have completed a planned network of radial cycle routes focused on the City Centre that is coherent,...

Sheffield to be the first UK City given a...
From Get Cycling “How do you get 800 people to take up cycling to work for the first time, in one of the UK’s hilliest cities? That’s the task taken on by Get Cycling, a York based Community Interest Company. BikeBoost is an innovative two-year programme offering bike loans and a full support programme to 800 Sheffield cyclists, over two years: working in partnership with Sheffield City...

Grey with a splash of colour
Who says co-ordinating your outfit with your bike is a girl thing? And do these pedestrians look threatened by the presence of a cyclist in this shared space?

You can't do that...
Now doesn’t this guy know that what he’s doing isn’t possible? If you’ve ever come across some other cycling blogs (I’ll mention no names, but you know where they are) then you will know what this guy is doing just isn’t playing ball. If you believe some people it just isn’t possible to cycle in jeans, and as for the low cut, well at the very least you...

Sustainable transport future...?
I will apologise in advance for going on a rant - so come back tomorrrow if you are just here for the pretty pictures :-) It all started when I picked up this month’s (no.75) edition of Clean Slate Magazine from CAT. It was the article entitled ”Going the Distance:a sustainable transport future” by Chris Mason which drew my eye. A self titled “young...

Weird Weather
We’ve been having quite strange weather at the moment. Sudden snowstorms that last for 5 to 10 minutes… …followed by brilliant sunshine. and it could almost be spring.

Cycle Parking
This is something I noticed a lot recently - a shift if you will. More and more people just stopping and chaining up their bikes in some convenient spot - often eschewing the official points. Some people would point to this as cyclists being lazy (can you really be lazy if you bother to cycle in the first place?), but I think what we are seeing is the bike becoming more everyday. This isn’t...

It's in the details...
I think our beloved council and their talented traffic planners are sometimes quite hurt and baffled when cyclists criticise the lovely facilities they so thoughtfully provide for us. They can’t imagine why we don’t like them or understand why we are so ungrateful. Look they have been so kind as to allow us passage into the centre of town with this lovely cycle lane. There were...

Coasting...
Now some people will throw their hands up in the air and exclaim “but he’s not going the right direction” No, not the preplanned route dreamt up by the traffic planners, but the most direct way to join up with the cycle path (which of course stops and starts anyway) and he was barely going any faster than the two girls who were chatting and sauntering along in no particular...

Aesthetics v comfort
A very tasteful cycle contra-flow lane in pink granite by the town hall, but as my daughter aptly put it: “Mmmmummmy itsss aaaa bbbittt bbbumpppy!” Looks like they ran out of pink granite! The signage on this bit is rather hard to spot and some added obstacles to add to the fairground ride experience…
